Model of Scholastic Paintings

Through the introduction of Mr. John Chan of the International Arts Gallery, I first met Professor Johnson Chow in 2010. I was at that time holding an exhibition with my wife Zhang Chi in the International Arts Gallery in Vancouver, Canada and Professor Chow came to support us. His first impression to us was a kind and conscientious senior from the Republic period. Later, through our conversations, I gradually learned that he has a close association with Mr. Zhang Daiqian. Leaving aside his fruitful life experience, just to look at his achievements in paintings and calligraphies would be extraordinary. His focus and dedication to art would command great respect.

We are living in a dynamic and diverse era. The people’s attitudes towards art are highly influenced by the environments that they are living in. Yet Professor Chow, on the contrary, has always positioned his feelings in art in his inner heart, in his life experience and his scope of knowledge. I have viewed his traditional Chinese paintings, – every branch, every leaf, every flower, and every bird, and his cooperative works with Mr. Zhang Diqian, – everyone quietly exudes the elegance of a scholar, this standard was definitely out of reach by ordinary artists. Practitioners of Chinese paintings would all understand, the taste of an artwork is determined by the superiority and inferiority of its “scent and elegance “. Professor Chow is super in ” scent and elegance “; which is corollary to his upbringings as well as the friends and associates in his circle. His ” scent and elegance ” is far beyond mere technique and skill and this “scent and elegance ” helps to effectuate his great artworks. I love his artworks, the same as I love Zhang Diqian’s artworks; – the specific scent of an era, the spirit of a scholar, the strenuous art focus, all help to create Professor Chow of this specific era.
